Steve Delia has been crumbling up paper and shooting it in the waste paper basket for 35 years. The ones he keeps he calls poetry. His first love was music but he had no musical ability whatsoever. He was still inspired by music however with The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Donovan leading the way. He was particularly intrigued by good lyrics. This gradually led him into poetry. He has been a member of the mad poets society for so long now that he still had a lot of his hair back then. He is also a member of the round robin poets, a critique group that includes his friend here tonight Mike Cohen. His favorite poetry moment was reading on WXPN as part of a mad poets group. He has 5 chapbooks. Revisited, Retyped and Revised Vol's 1 and 2, Haiku and other Imaginings, The Zoo Poems and the one most close to his heart, 1622 Church Street. Since he can't grow his hair back he has focused on continuing to try and become a better writer.
Reflective, philosophical, and humorous, Mike Cohen's writing is an ongoing attempt to make sense of this life and this universe It addresses the Big Bang and the little bumps as well. There is no topic too meaningful or too nonsensical.
Mike’s poetry has appeared in the Mad Poets Review, Poetry Forum Anthology, Fox Chase Review, Schuylkill Valley Journal, the Mt. Airy Times Express, and the Philadelphia Daily News. His poetic presentations have been featured in programs at various schools, bookstores, coffee shops, and libraries. His poems have been aired on SKN radio. Mike has served as a judge in the Montgomery County Poet Laureate competition.
Mike’s poetic philosophy is: “Poetry doesn’t have the answers, it’s just a beautiful way of putting the questions.”
Currently, Mike hosts Poetry Aloud and Alive, a popular monthly poetry program in its fifth year at Mt. Airy’s Big Blue Marble Book Store. His articles on Philadelphia sculpture appear in the Schuylkill Valley Journal in which he is a contributing editor. He is a docent at Chestnut Hill’s Woodmere Art Museum.
